garden muse

sifting through the pricked and pointed
sharp-edged leaves
in search of ripe
 cucumbers
I smile---

        this also by seed---

and see that it gives way

            tomatoes fatten and split
            carrots bulge, dig deeper
romaine and red leaf flare and curl

~

oh, yes, there are other gods
they stir or stab within the breast;
punch and gallop from the loins
others merely stand in the shadows, watching

but today
this one---
    this vegetable, earth goddess---
 sings to me

~

this slow-ripening heart
